Walking Alongside Families: An Advocate’s Perspective

Walking Alongside Families: An Advocate's Perspective

By Elizabeth Lopez, Bilingual Family Advocacy Manager,
Denver Children’s Advocacy Center

One of the things I value most about my role at Denver Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC) is the privilege of walking beside families during some of the most painful and uncertain moments of their lives. No two stories are ever the same, yet what remains constant is the quiet strength families carry, even when they feel overwhelmed, afraid, and unsure of what comes next. Recently, I had the opportunity to support a caregiver whose resilience and unwavering determination to protect and care for her family left a profound and lasting impact on me.

Finding Connection During a Difficult Time

This family came to DCAC after a referral from the Denver Police Department following a forensic interview in January. Like many families we serve, they arrived carrying the invisible weight of uncertainty, fear, and emotional exhaustion

One of the first challenges we faced was simply finding consistent ways to stay connected. It was an especially busy time for our team, and we were not always able to meet in person. Much of our communication happened through phone calls and emails, methods that while helpful can never fully replace the comfort of in-person emotional support families often need.

Transportation quickly emerged as another barrier. When a family is already overwhelmed, something as basic as getting to appointments or completing applications can feel like an impossible task.

Despite these challenges, the client remained incredibly engaged and determined. Her responsiveness and willingness to stay connected, even during such a painful and uncertain time, reflected her deep commitment to her family’s well-being.

Removing Barriers, Creating Stability

Throughout our time working together, my goal was to ensure she felt supported, informed, and never alone in the process. We talked through transportation options, created safety plans for both home and school, and explored resources that could help her family begin to heal after such a traumatic experience

She also shared concerns about her family’s financial stability and housing. These worries added another layer of stress during an already fragile time. With the support of our case manager, Andrea, I was able to help her complete an assistance application that ultimately eased some of that pressure. Andrea provided reassurance and steady guidance throughout the process. Her knowledge and compassion allowed us to move forward with confidence and ensured the client received the support she needed.

Moments like this highlight how powerful collaboration can be. When staff come together with shared purpose and compassion, we are able to create meaningful change in the lives of the families we serve.

The Strength Families Bring

What stood out most to me about this client was her resilience.

She was navigating an active investigation, financial stress, and the emotional weight of supporting her family, all while managing her own mental health challenges. Yet even in the face of so much hardship, she remained focused and proactive.

Her motivation came from deep love and protectiveness. It was clear she was willing to do whatever it took to create safety and stability for her family.

A Shift Toward Hope

Over time, I saw a noticeable shift – from uncertainty and stress to relief and gratitude.

When I followed up after she received assistance, she shared how meaningful it was to feel prioritized. She expressed that being seen, heard, and supported made her feel less alone. Knowing that someone was advocating alongside her gave her a renewed sense of strength. What once felt overwhelming became more manageable. She began to regain a sense of stability and hope.

Progress in this story looks like empowerment. It looks like a caregiver who, despite fear and uncertainty, found the courage to advocate for her family. It looks like accessing resources that reduced both emotional and financial strain. It looks like regaining a sense of control, stability, and hope during one of the most difficult chapters of her life.

Sometimes healing begins in quiet moments – feeling heard, receiving support, and realizing you do not have to carry everything alone.

Why This Work Matters

This experience reinforced why our work matters and why meeting families with urgency, empathy, and compassion is so important.

I wish more people understood how resilient and capable the children and families we serve truly are. They carry immense strength, even in the face of trauma and hardship. Our role is not to replace that strength, but to walk alongside them and help remove the barriers standing in their way.

You Make This Work Possible

Because of the generosity of donors and community partners, DCAC is able to provide advocacy, transportation assistance, and critical resources when families need them most.

Your support helps families move forward, not just with services, but with dignity, stability, and hope.

Together, we can ensure that more children and families receive the care, compassion, and support they deserve.
